Chapter 15 – Say What Now?

Dana squeezed Missy’s hand as the car headed down the 79th Avenue Traverse to the Upper West Side. She contemplated many times to make a break for it but once again, if she were alone, she would have considered it. But, with Missy in-tow it was not an option. Her eyes moved to the rear-view mirror and she could feel Hightower watch her every move. She sat in-between Missy and Jesse, because she did not want the asshole sitting next to her daughter.

Her thoughts raced and she recalled the address on the business card. She piped up, “I thought we were supposed to meet at Kofax Rare Books.”

Hightower simply shook his head and continued to stare forward. “Mr. Kofax wants to see you and Missy at his townstone.” He then went quiet.

Dana tilted her head back to acknowledge that at least they would be going into a bright airy home, but it did not make things any safer for them both. When you are swimming, whether you are in the middle of the ocean or off splashing around by a nice beach...you are still in the water with the fucking sharks. “Got ya.”

She looked at Jesse who simply kept his angry, narrowed eyes locked on her. She forced a smile and rolled her eyes. She got nothing in return. Her thoughts wandered. ‘So, that’s the way it’s going to be. A drive, in silence. Okay.’

Daily pointed at the windshield. “There...they’re heading past 5th Avenue.”

Parker simply piloted the car and wished his partner would calm down. He snarled at him, “I see them.”

With the light traffic, it did not take them long to get to Casa Kofax.

Dana knew the routine and made her way up the stairs and into the luxurious foyer like she owned the place.

Hightower waved them towards the living room, and they made their way inside to get comfortable.

Dana tugged at Missy to sit beside her, and she looked down at the brand-new coffee table just like the old one. A smirk curled across her mouth and she looked up at Jesse who limped inside too and kept his gaze trained on her. She smirked and tilted her head towards the gorgeous table, and she could not help but poke the tiger. She sarcastically asked him, “Did Mr. Kofax get you to glue it back together again like Humpty-Dumpty?”

Missy looked at the gorgeous coffee table and took off her backpack to get comfortable on the cushy sofa.

Jesse made a hobbled move towards them and saw Dana move in front of Missy. He did not expect Hightower to get in his way, though.

The very large man looked at him blankly and shook his head ever so slightly. That was enough. He watched the convalescent man take a step back and avert his gaze.

Dana smiled and could not help but break his balls figuratively and in real life. She laughed to herself. ‘Kudos, Dana...kudos.’

A voice pierced the room. “No, Jesse did not have to glue it back together again, Miss Hawkins.
